Celebration of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on 1st of October

In India, National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is celebrated on 1st of October every year to make aware about the need and importance of the voluntary blood donation, thus saving a precious life of needy ones. Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology was one who first started celebrating this day on 1st of October in the year 1975. Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology was first recognized at 22nd of October in the year 1971 under the guidance of Mrs. K. Swaroop Krishen and Dr. J.G. Jolly.

Dr Jolly took a decision to get the blood supply from voluntary donors only. He created the Blood Bank Society to create awareness about the safety and necessity of obtaining blood only from volunteers. He formally presented an all-India conference to share this idea to blood banker, thus established Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology (ISBTI)

Objective of celebrating National Voluntary Blood donation Day:-

  • To preserve /store the blood in stock in blood banks for any urgent and serious requirement.
  • To motivate and encourage individuals who has never thought of donating blood even being a healthy person.
  • To create situation where one will not have the need of requesting people to donate in serious requirements. The donated blood will be available before the requirement of blood by needy one.
  • To keep and maintain a proper cycle of blood donation in every area and thus saving lives as quickly as we can.

The need for blood is constantly increasing all over the world. Diseases like dengue, sickle cell anemia, certain types of cancers, natural and man-made disasters etc. have been the major cause for the need of donor blood all over the world. Now a days most of individual is dying due to road accidents. Voluntary blood donation is an social service as it is done without selfish act of even knowing who it will help.

A lots of events, medical camps, rallies, awareness program and promotional activities are organized in all states at the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day to make aware the people about the blood donation and thus helping in increasing blood donor volunteers.

Many people fail to become blood donor volunteer due to their false myth that donation of blood can lead to weakness or infection. Blood donation is not only give life to needy one,but also helps to improve health of blood donor as it helps to maintain the iron levels in the body that improves the heart problems and avoids certain types of cancers.Regular blood donation  helps to burn calories and give mental relaxation by saving lives.
